Internal updates are possible, but the risk is in what happens after an update, not during it. Plugin conflicts and payment gateway changes aren't always obvious immediately. They sometimes surface hours or days later, and they need someone with real WordPress experience to diagnose and fix quickly. For nonprofits without a dedicated technical team, ongoing managed maintenance is almost always less expensive than emergency repairs after something breaks at a critical moment.
