Custom Functionality

Custom WordPress functionality, not off-the-shelf plugins jammed together

Portals, booking systems, calculators, integrations, AI-powered features -- if you can describe what you want your site to do, we can build it. 700+ WordPress sites since 2002, and a team that writes PHP for a living.

Most agencies build a website and stop there. When you ask for something the theme doesn't do out of the box, you get shrugs, or a $50 plugin from the marketplace that half-works and breaks on the next update.

That's not us. We've spent 24+ years writing custom WordPress code, and we build functionality that fits your business instead of forcing your business to fit a plugin.

The real cut: we don't reinvent the wheel when a reliable third-party tool already solves the problem well. If there's a battle-tested plugin, SaaS, or API that fits your needs, we'll recommend it and integrate it properly. We custom-develop when it actually makes the most sense -- when off-the-shelf doesn't fit your workflow, when the marketplace options are junk, or when custom is cheaper long-term than the SaaS subscription you'd be paying forever.

Client-Facing Tools

Portals, dashboards, and gated experiences

Give your customers a reason to come back to the site, not just find your phone number and leave.

Client login portals

Members-only areas where customers see their orders, documents, invoices, project status, or exclusive content.

Customer dashboards

A landing screen after login that shows what matters to that user, personalized to their account or role.

Booking & scheduling

Native scheduling built into the site, or a clean integration with Calendly, Acuity, HubSpot Meetings, or Google Calendar.

Quote calculators

Roofing sqft estimators, moving quote tools, financing calculators, project scoping wizards -- anything that turns a form into a lead.

Multi-step forms with logic

Long forms that only show questions relevant to each answer. Better completion rates, cleaner data.

File download hubs

Gated resource libraries, PDF catalogs, brochures, and training docs behind a login or an email opt-in.

Content & Catalog Systems

Structured content that scales

When you've got hundreds of products, locations, team members, or projects, you need a real system. Not 300 pages built by hand.

Product catalogs

Searchable, filterable catalogs with spec sheets, PDF downloads, related items, and inquiry forms per product.

Portfolio & gallery systems

Filter by tag, category, industry, or service. Grid layouts, lightboxes, case-study pages that auto-link back.

Team bios & directories

Add team members with a couple clicks. Search, filter by department, individual bio pages that stay consistent.

Events & class calendars

Add events, workshops, and shows. Visitors can browse, register, and buy tickets right on the site.

Job board & careers portal

Post openings, take applications, route resumes to hiring managers, and keep an ATS-friendly record.

Case study library

Filterable by industry, service, or result. The kind of proof section that actually converts on B2B sites.

Location & store finders

ZIP-code lookups, interactive maps, dealer locators for franchises and multi-location businesses.

Testimonial & review engines

Pull reviews from Google, filter and display them, rotate featured ones, and keep the schema markup right for SEO.

Integrations & Automation

Connect your site to the tools you already use

Your website shouldn't be a data silo. Every form fill, booking, and sale should flow into the tools your team actually works in.

CRM integrations

Leads go straight into HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive, Zoho, or whatever you're running. Mapped to the right fields, routed to the right rep.

Email marketing sync

Mailchimp, Klaviyo, ActiveCampaign, Constant Contact -- opt-ins flow in, tags applied, sequences triggered.

Zapier, Make, & n8n

Chain your site to hundreds of other tools without waiting on a developer every time you want a new workflow.

SMS & email notifications

Twilio, SendGrid, Postmark -- your team gets texted or emailed the moment a lead comes in.

Calendar sync

Google Calendar, Outlook, Acuity, Calendly, HubSpot Meetings -- bookings sync both ways.

Payments & billing

Stripe, Square, PayPal, QuickBooks. One-time payments, subscriptions, invoicing built into the site flow.

Lead routing by zip or service

Multi-location? Franchise network? We route each lead to the right office based on their location or the service they asked about.

Google Sheets & reporting

Every form fill logged to a Sheet in real time. Simple, auditable, easy for non-technical folks to look at.

Call tracking

CallRail, WhatConverts -- know which channels and campaigns actually drive phone calls, not just clicks.

Review-request automation

After a customer buys or a service is completed, we can trigger an automated Google review request. Compounds over time.

AI-Era Features

Built for how people search now

Google isn't the only search engine anymore. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini are pulling content from sites like yours every day. We build features that work for both.

AI site search

Semantic search that understands intent, not just keywords. Visitors find what they need in one query instead of clicking through five pages.

On-site chatbots

Trained on your content, not a generic bot. Answers real questions about your services, hours, pricing, and process.

Auto-summaries & TL;DRs

Long articles get an AI-generated summary at the top. Readers scan, decide, and stay.

Content recommendations

Personalized "you might also like" logic driven by what the visitor read, not a random sidebar.

Structured data for AI citations

Schema markup and content structure that helps AI engines actually cite your site. See our AI Visibility service for the deep version.

Programmatic pages, done right

Generate hundreds of location or service-combo pages from a data source, without the thin-content penalty. We know where the line is.

Under the Hood

Custom development for teams who need more

When off-the-shelf isn't enough, we go deeper. Real PHP, real MySQL, real custom code -- built to your business, not a marketplace template.

Custom WordPress plugins

Built for your specific business logic, packaged, versioned, and documented so anyone can maintain it.

Custom Gutenberg blocks

Purpose-built editor blocks so your team creates on-brand pages without designer hand-holding.

Custom REST APIs

Expose WordPress data to your mobile app, dashboard, or partner integration. Auth, rate limits, the works.

Custom post types & fields

ACF, Meta Box, or hand-coded. Structured content models that match how your business actually organizes information.

Bulk import & data migration

Move thousands of records from a legacy system, spreadsheet, or old CMS into WordPress without breaking the URLs or the SEO.

Sales & Conversion

Features that actually move leads

A pretty site that doesn't convert is a $10k paperweight. These are the pieces we add when the goal is more leads, not just a portfolio piece.

PPC landing page systems

Template systems so you can spin up campaign-specific landing pages fast, without a dev ticket every time.

Popups & exit intent

Right offer, right moment. Not the aggressive stuff that tanks your bounce rate.

A/B testing infrastructure

Test headlines, CTAs, layouts, and pricing without breaking the site or the analytics.

Product configurators

Auto trim builders, kitchen designers, package selectors -- interactive tools that let a visitor spec their thing before they call.

Coupon & promo systems

Time-limited codes, first-visit offers, seasonal campaigns, all managed from a single dashboard.

Referral tracking

Know who sent whom. Reward referrers automatically, or just track the source for attribution.

Whatever You're Imagining

If you can describe it, we can build it

The lists on this page cover the stuff we get asked about most, but they're not an exhaustive menu. If you've got an idea for how your site could work harder for your business -- a specific workflow, a piece of functionality your competitors don't have, a way to save your team hours a week -- we want to hear it.

Custom vs. off-the-shelf, the straight cut: we'll always tell you which way makes more sense for your specific situation. If there's a reliable third-party plugin, SaaS, or API that solves it well, we recommend and integrate that. If your needs are unusual enough that off-the-shelf falls short, we build custom. The goal is what works best for your business long-term, not what pads our invoice.

We develop exclusively in PHP, MySQL, and WordPress, with JavaScript (React, Next.js) where a project genuinely needs it. That's our stack, and it's what we've been shipping for 24+ years. We write clean, documented, maintainable code that another developer could pick up if you ever moved on.

We do not do mobile app development. No native iOS, no native Android. We build web apps that run in the browser and work on phones and tablets, and if you're not sure which one you need, we'll help you figure it out on the first call.

Is this right for you?

Who custom functionality is (and isn't) a fit for

Custom development pays for itself when it saves your team real time or drives real revenue. It's overkill when your needs are simple.

You're a fit if

  • Your business has a workflow or process a stock theme can't handle
  • Your team spends hours a week on something a portal or automation could do
  • You need your site to talk to a CRM, ERP, or third-party tool
  • You've got 100+ products, locations, or team members that need real structure
  • You want to build once and own the code, not rent a SaaS forever

You probably don't need this if

  • You need a native iOS or Android app (we don't build those)
  • A $30/month SaaS already does the thing you need
  • Your site is small enough that a good theme + a couple plugins is fine
  • You're not on WordPress and don't plan to be (we only build WordPress)

We'll tell you straight on the first call if custom isn't the right move.

Process & Investment

How custom projects work

Every custom-functionality project is different, so we scope every one individually instead of pretending there's a fixed price list.

Simple integrations and add-ons can be a few hundred dollars. Portals, calculators, and multi-step tools typically land in the low-to-mid four figures. Custom plugins and large data-driven systems scale up from there. Whatever the size, you get a fixed-fee written scope before any work starts -- no billable-hours meter running in the background.

Most projects run 3-8 weeks depending on complexity, and you work directly with the person building it. No project manager relaying messages back and forth.

FAQs

What languages and technologies do you build in?

We develop exclusively in PHP, MySQL, and WordPress. When a project needs it, we also build in JavaScript and modern JS frameworks like React and Next.js. We don't do mobile app development, and we don't do headless WordPress builds.

Can you integrate with the tools we already use?

Almost always yes. If a tool has an API or webhooks, we can connect to it. HubSpot, Salesforce, QuickBooks, Stripe, Twilio, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zapier, Make, n8n -- all fair game. If you're not sure whether your tool can talk to WordPress, tell us what it is on the first call and we'll check.

Do we own the custom code you write for us?

Yes. Everything we build is yours -- code, database schema, custom plugins, the whole thing. No proprietary lock-in. If you ever move on from us, another developer can pick it up.

What if the plugin already exists in the WordPress marketplace?

We'll tell you. If there's a solid off-the-shelf plugin that does what you need for $50, we'll recommend it and configure it properly instead of quoting a custom build. We only build custom when the off-the-shelf version doesn't cover what you actually need.

Can you add custom functionality to an existing site, or does it require a rebuild?

Usually we can add it to an existing site, as long as the site is on WordPress and built reasonably well. If the current site is a mess (bad theme, conflicting plugins, hacked-together customizations), sometimes it's more cost-effective to rebuild than to keep patching. We'll audit the site first and give you a straight answer.

How long do custom functionality projects take?

Depends on scope. A single integration or small tool might be 1-2 weeks. A full portal, calculator, or plugin build is typically 3-8 weeks. Large multi-system builds go longer. We give you a real timeline in the written scope before we start.
