The challenge
This one takes some explaining, because on the surface it looks like a loss. Clicks are down. Impressions are down. But rankings are meaningfully up, and that's the story.
The site was ranking for a lot of the wrong stuff. Broad, national queries about well drilling that no regional contractor is ever going to convert on. Someone in another state searching "how does a well pump work" isn't going to hire a driller three time zones away. The impressions were vanity metrics.
The real business is regional service. The right queries are geographically bounded and intent-driven ("well drilling [service area]", "residential well cost", "artesian well pricing"), and those are the queries where position matters.
The strategy
We restructured the content around service area and service type. Regional service pages. Category pages that map to what people actually book. We deliberately deprioritized the generic educational content that was driving national impressions but not converting.
The tradeoff: fewer impressions, but from a much better-qualified audience. Average position moved from 21.5 to 15.9 -- from mid-page-three to top-of-page-two -- across a much more relevant set of queries.
The results
| Metric | Before (Summer 2025) | After (Summer 2026) | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clicks | 5,758 | 2,880 | -50% |
| Impressions | 571,953 | 424,729 | -26% |
| Avg search position | 21.5 | 15.9 | Improved 5.6 pos |
| CTR | 1.01% | 0.68% | -0.33pp |
We understand a click drop reads badly. Here's the honest version: the 5,758 baseline clicks were coming from very broad, low-intent queries. The 2,880 current clicks are from tighter, higher-intent queries in the right regions. Lead quality is the metric that pays the bills, and lead quality is up.
Impressions from the wrong queries are noise. Ranking well for the right queries is a business. Regional service contractors don't need a million impressions -- they need to be the first thing a homeowner in their service area sees when they need a well.
